3 Common HVAC Problems – And What to Do Next

Common HVAC Problems

Modern HVAC systems are designed to essentially run themselves, without much interference from homeowners. While they do require some preventative maintenance to keep things up to par, for the most part your home heating and cooling system will continue to run fairly efficiently, so long as you are regularly changing out those air filters and keep your thermostat set at a reasonable temperature for comfort and energy costs.

However, there are a few common problems that arise that you may need to be on the look out for.

A Malfunctioning Thermostat

One of the main items on our list for the twice-yearly HVAC tuneups we provide to our Comfort Protection Plan Members is checking out your home’s thermostat. Whether the traditional manual variation, or one of the newer programmable thermostats that you can set at different temperatures for different times of day, thermostats are one of the most common causes of HVAC problems. When your A/C just won’t blow cool air, we like to check out the thermostat first.

In many cases, we find that it simply isn’t transmitting the correct temperature to your outdoor unit, and some adjustments or even a replacement may be necessary. Luckily, thermostats are cost-effective to replace and are widely available at almost any local home-improvement store. Before you decide to replace it, however, make sure a qualified professional has been by to take a look first, and help you decide what type of thermostat would be right for your home.

Is Your Drain Clogged?

No, not your kitchen or bathroom drain… the drain located inside your HVAC unit. It’s possible for it to become clogged, with dirt or other debris, over time. Without proper draining, it will begin to affect your HVAC unit’s ability to cool your home effectively.

This is a problem that is fairly quick to fix, and preventative maintenance provided once or twice per year will help ensure that it never happens in the first place.

Issues With Your Ductwork

One common reason our customers give us a call is due to an issue where the A/C is on and appears to be blowing sufficiently cool air… just not enough of it. In these cases, it’s likely we’ll discover possible clogs, leaks, or loose spots in the ductwork itself. When air is blowing directly at a clog, it cannot get around it with enough force to make it all the way up through your vents to cool your home. With loose seals or leaks, the cool air may simply be settled into the walls of your home and never quite make it out to you.

If your ductwork is clogged, you’ll need a professional to give them a thorough inspection and cleaning. Loose seals or leaks can be fixed during the same visit.
