The colder weather is on its way. If you forget to prepare your pipes before a big freeze or you try to DIY a plumbing project, you could end up sitting in the middle of a plumbing disaster.
When unexpected emergencies happen it’s important to know what to do next, so you can minimize damage and have your pipes repaired quickly.
Turn off your main water supply
The first thing you should do is cut off your main water supply. There are at least two main valves in your home and they are located at your water meter. One is before the meter, and one is after the meter. Once you find the meter, turn handle clockwise.
Water pressure will more than likely stay in your system and you will need to turn on your sinks to allow the remaining water to come out.
Watch out for electrical shocks
If the broken pipe is near any electrical switches or your fuse box, turn off your home’s electricity and try to cover and protect the switches and fuses to further guarantee your safety.
Minimize damage
Use pots and pans to collect the water, move your furniture out of harms way and move valuables to higher ground.
Contact your insurance agency
Make sure to document the damage caused from your pipe bursting and call your insurance agency as soon as possible to get started on your claim.
